On Writing_ Coming, Aphrodite!

"Coming Aphrodite" and Willa Cather on Writing

What does it mean to be an artist? What does it mean to create art? Does commercialization dilute the value of artistic expression?

In this book club double-feature, we'll work through two short reads from American literary pioneer Willa Cather. First, we'll read her (uncharacteristically steamy) short story, "Coming, Aphrodite!" which follows the lives and careers of Don Hedger and Eden Bowers, artists with diverging views on what it means to share their art with the world.

Following that, we'll read through Willa Cather on Writing, a collection of Cather's letters and essays that explore the nature of art, writing, and publishing at her time.

Between the two works, we'll assess how Cather depicts the world of art and what it means to be an artist, and how her evaluation of creativity does or does not hold up over one hundred years later.
